Johnny Lightning cars were founded in 1969 by Topper Toys of Elizabeth in New Jersey to compete with Matchbox. Henry Orenstein, the owner, designed and produced fifteen different cars in a year, with the main focus on speed. One of their biggest selling points was the launcher and Accelerator Loop that eliminated the need for gravity and pushed the cars around for another lap. Eventually, they started selling diecast cars they knew would appeal to their older customers. In the late 1990’s the diecast toy car business grew in the U.S.

Today, their cars are produced by Round 2, LLC. They make older models and continue to create new ones. The cars also come in a number of models. View Double Play Hobby Consignments’ selection of Johnny Lightning diecast cars below.
